4th June 1989: Chinese troops opened fire on demonstrators who had been protesting and demonstrating in the Tiananmen Square, a city square in Beijing, China. The Tiananmen Square protests and massacre led to the deaths of many demonstrators, bystanders and soldiers.

The protests had started on April 16, a day after pro-reform leader Hu Yaobang died of a heart attack.

Over 1,000 students started demonstrations against corruption, and the resulting fatalities on the 4th of June are estimated to be several hundreds or thousands, and many more wounded. Although the Tiananmen Square protests are the most famous, there were major protests in many other Chinese cities.
