June Historical Events

2nd June 1953: Queen Elizabeth II was crowned, at the age of 25, at a ceremony held at Westminster Abbey. This was after the death of her father, King George VI. King George VI had died the previous year on 6 February 1952.

After her coronation, Elizabeth took an oath and was anointed with holy oil. She became the Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Pakistan, and celebrations were held across the Commonwealth nations.

1st June 1963: Kenya attained internal self rule (partial independence). The East African country had been a British colony since 1920. But on 12 December 1964 Kenya became fully independent and was named a republic.

June 1 is a national holiday in Kenya, known as Madaraka Day. Moreover, the 12th of December is Jamhuri Day, a day of recognition of Kenya's independence.

4th June 1989: Chinese troops opened fire on demonstrators who had been protesting and demonstrating in the Tiananmen Square, a city square in Beijing, China. The Tiananmen Square protests and massacre led to the deaths of many demonstrators, bystanders and soldiers.

The protests had started on April 16, a day after pro-reform leader Hu Yaobang died of a heart attack.

Over 1,000 students started demonstrations against corruption, and the resulting fatalities on the 4th of June are estimated to be several hundreds or thousands, and many more wounded. Although the Tiananmen Square protests are the most famous, there were major protests in many other Chinese cities.

2nd June 1875: Telephone inventor and Canadian-American scientist Alexander Graham Bell (born on March 3, 1847) and his assistant Watson made the first sound transmission from one device to another device in a second room.

This led to the patenting of the first telephone on March 7, 1876 by Bell. He later co-founded the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1885.
